Meet 2025 AIA Trust Chair: Juan Self, AIA, NOMA, CSI

Juan Self, AIA, NOMA, CSI, a native of Clarksdale, MS, is a founding principal of Self + Tucker Architects, a multi-disciplinary firm in Memphis, Tennessee. Juan brings over 40 years of architectural expertise to his role as the 2025 Chair of the AIA Trust.  With a diverse portfolio that spans schools, churches, multi-family housing, civic and government buildings, commercial spaces, and cultural institutions, Self + Tucker Architects has earned multiple awards for excellence in architecture, preservation, and sustainability.

He believes that thoughtful design with a community centered focus results in a built environment that promotes a better quality of life for all. Behind each design strategy is an emphasis on the architect’s responsibility and commitment to the longevity of our planet and its inhabitants. He has a passion for neighborhood development, community empowerment through revitalization, sustainable design, and the preservation of cultural assets.

In 1995, Juan and his partner Jimmie Tucker founded Self + Tucker Architects, a firm committed to creating spaces that enrich the Memphis community. Their work is driven by a philosophy of placemaking that honors both the significance of the sites they transform and the goals of the projects they undertake. Beyond their design expertise, the firm places a strong emphasis on cultivating a positive and collaborative culture, where mentoring and investing in their talent are central priorities. They dedicate significant time to developing their team, fostering an environment where individuals can thrive and grow professionally. With a forward-thinking approach, they balance aesthetic considerations with environmental sustainability, drawing on their understanding of both history and the future.

Juan’s impact on the Memphis community extends well beyond his architectural practice. He is a passionate advocate for the city’s growth and preservation, dedicating much of his time to organizations that foster the city’s development and cultural heritage. In addition to his leadership roles on various local boards, Juan has actively supported initiatives aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods and preserving historic landmarks. His work ensures that Memphis continues to thrive with a blend of innovation and respect for its rich history, making him a central figure in the city’s ongoing transformation. Through these efforts, Juan embodies a commitment to making Memphis a better place for its residents, balancing progress with a deep respect for the community’s roots.

Ever service minded, Juan has dedicated time working with the AIA Memphis’ and NOMA Memphis’ Board of Directors, Downtown Memphis Design Review Board, and NCARB’s Item Writing and Review Committee. Juan also served as chairman of the Memphis/Shelby County Building Code Advisory Board. He currently serves as a board member of several notable organizations, including the Tennessee Preservation Trust Board, Tennessee Historical Commission Review Board (vice-chair), and the his leadership reaches to the national level as well, with his guidance of the AIA Trust since 2021, appointed by AIA President Jane Frederick, FAIA.

Through his professional and community involvement, Juan Self continues to shape the architectural landscape of Memphis and beyond. The AIA Trust is excited to have Juan serve as the 2025 Chair as it seeks to expand its visibility and value to AIA members.
