Safe Harbor 401(k) plan

You may be familiar with 401(k) retirement plans. But a Safe Harbor 401(k) plan is different.

With a traditional 401(k), salary deferral contributions made by highly compensated employees, like owners, are limited by contributions made by employees. A Safe Harbor 401(k) includes fewer restrictions for highly compensated employees, offering the freedom to defer the maximum permitted by the plan and IRS regardless of the size of employee contributions or firm participation levels. The salary deferral limit for 2022 increased to $20,500. Participants aged 50 and over can contribute an additional $6,500 for a total of $27,000.

With a Safe Harbor 401(k), AIA members with employees could benefit from:

  • Combining with profit-sharing plans to contribute the maximum
  • No discrimination testing
  • Catch-Up contributions for participants over age 50
